adult active retirement communities

Retirement is a marvelous time of life, and active adult communities provide retirees with the ability to hang out with same-minded folks. As I am approaching my retirement years, my thoughts are turning to just these kinds of communities. But where do I start looking to find the perfect one to suit my wants and desires?

My search initially began on the internet to find the most desirable areas of the country to retire to. I came to the realization though that I didn’t have to just search in the US,as there are a lot of active and beautiful adult living communities in places like Hawaii and Mexico. But also if I did decide to stay within the boundaries of my home state, there are neighborhoods all over that cater only to the retirement crowd. It’s convenient to have the option of looking for the right community in any location on the planet in the comfort of my own home.

One of the most chosen types of active adult communities is the golfer community. These communities are quite normally set in spectacular surroundings with lush green fairways and even wildlife in some areas. The golf course community is most often found in the warmer southern states, but a few northern states have some choice locations as well.

Another awesome feature of many active retirement communities is the choice of maintained for you homes. Let’s face the fact: I don’t want to spend my retirement years upkeeping a piece of property when these places do it all for you, and the cost is all figured into the homeowners fees. Why do that when you can spend your golden years doing what you want to do instead of what you hate to do.

Most retirees also want to live in a locality that offers lots of choices in terms of entertainment and activities since the years after a busy career is the time you want to spendkicking back and relaxing. Many neighborhoods will provide you with perks like hot tubs, clubhouses, and shopping centers to keep everyone happy doing the activities they love most.

I am truly looking forward to the option of eating out quite often in my retirement, so my plans are to be in an active retirement community surrounded by gourmet restaurants. Looking for neighborhoods on the internet will allow me to quckly find places that fit all the requirements I’ve layed out here.

Your golden years are a lovely occasion in life to sit back and sniff the roses, enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee whenever you choose, and indulge in activities that you really like doing. The right active retirement neighborhoods can help you enjoy the retirement of your dreams, so get online and find your new home now!

In many cases home school students are encouraged to follow a curriculum set by the state unless they get a specialized curriculum approved by the state regent’s board. This is actually a good thing for home school students because that means that they can purchase used home school books instead of having to spend money on new books.

It seems a little odd to be talking about used home school books as being essential to the home school student but very little about being home schooled is left to chance as far as a curriculum goes and as far as the state regents is concerned. The students may be learning at home but the material they are required to learn is the same as public and private school students and the text books are also very similar.

Because we are talking about home schooling it goes without saying that some of the elements will be different than traditionally schooled students. The one main difference is that the books used by the home school student are provided by their parents but they still must follow a curriculum. A home school student and their parents can save a great deal of money, and get the books they need, if they purchase used home school books that follow state approved curriculum.

It takes a lot of the guess work out of how classes are to be conducted for home school students and it can reduce the cost as text books can be very expensive. The other advantage to used home school books is that the home school student gets more current text books than the traditionally schooled student but still winds up paying a lot less than if they bought their books new.

How to Get Them

As with anything in this day and age you can get used home school books on the internet and there are a lot of websites dedicated to used home school books. You can also get curriculum information on the websites that sell used home school books and you can also get a feel for what types of materials to offer your home school student by checking out these home school sites. The internet can prove to be the single biggest resource for any home school student and their parents and as more information becomes available on the internet about home schooling the more valuable of a resource it becomes.

The internet is also helping home schooled children and their parents cut down on costs in another way. For several years now e-books have been very popular and these are books that are on a computer and can only be viewed on a computer. All you are really getting is the information from the book without the hard cover and paper pages and this is a perfect resource for home school children that are allowed to learn at their own pace. As we can see, technology is definitely making home schooling easier every day.

Teaching high school at home does not have to be difficult, but there are a few things that you are going to have to take into consideration first. If you have children and think that they would be better off getting their education at home, then teaching high school from home is going to be a fantastic option.

If you want to begin teaching high school from home, one of the first things you are going to have to do is become qualified. There are many tests that you can take which will determine how skilled you are and let you know whether you are prepared to teach your children from home.

Get Prepared

If you want to begin teaching high school from home then it is important that you know that there are a few issues you are going to need to think about. You are going to have to come up with lessons to give to your children for one, and include all the important subjects, such as math, English, science, history, and geography, to name a few.

You are also going to have to get the proper supplies, including paper, pens, pencils, rulers, and markers. You need to make sure that your children will have all the necessary materials for completing their schoolwork and there are many different things that you are going to want to include here.

Books and videos will also be helpful to you here, and most likely you already have a television and VCR or DVD player so at least you will not have to worry about that.

Talk to Your Kids

Of course the final decision is going to be up to you and whether you are interested in teaching high school from home, but you are also going to want to take your children’s opinions into consideration. Ask them how they feel about the idea and really listen to what they have to say.

After all home schooling is a very big change from regular schooling and it is important that your children are interested in the idea and ready to make that change in their lives. They will not be able to go to class and hang out with their friends as often and you need to make sure that they are fine with this and not make the decision for them. School is hard enough and you should really consider your children’s feelings here.

Although a home school education is different than traditional schooling in many ways, there is a similar strategy employed in the area of study skills. By remembering these three key points, students can develop successful habits that will benefit them in their current studies, and will also create a lasting mindset that will help them in their future careers.

Purpose of Study

To properly encourage successful home school study skills, a student needs to look at their motivating factors. Perhaps the first reason they need to study is to be obedient to their parents, yet this objective alone won’t supply the necessary incentive to personally achieve. The study skills of home school students need a foundational principle on which to rest.

Since many families choose this method of education for religious reasons, a student may look at their time of studying as a God-given privilege; it’s a time for them to recognize and nurture the gifts and talents given to them by their Creator. Studying in a home school environment also allows freedom to focus on specific areas of interest, which adds an atmosphere of excitement to the daily lessons. Having a vision of a future career in a certain field is another excellent motivating force in developing sensible home school study skills.

Place to Study

Even though the home school student is in a more relaxed and comfortable setting than students in a traditional school, the basic principles of studying still apply. Oftentimes, studying is viewed as a lonely activity, but once the motivating forces are in place, this aspect of learning can become a time of enjoyable intellectual stimulation. The first step to encourage profitable study skills in the home school is to find a suitable place with few distractions.

Concentration isn’t possible with the television on, music playing or phone calls interrupting the student. The place to study should be comfortable, but lounging in bed or sprawled out on the sofa may negatively affect their thinking and make the student drowsy. A desk in their bedroom, proper lighting and access to reference books or the computer provides the essentials to practice good study skills in the home school.

Planning to Study

The successful development of home school study skills needs a plan that will help the student maximize their time of study. A calendar is necessary to mark the days in which reports are due or projects need to be finished. Once that is established, the student can then calculate the time needed for these subjects and work out a daily timetable for their completion.

Having a separate notebook and folder for every subject is important and will make organizing notes and worksheets easier. Lastly, scheduling well-earned breaks contribute to a sense of refreshment and accomplishment.

Once you have made the decision to home school your child or children, you should check with the laws of your state to see that you are doing everything by the book. This is important as you wouldn’t want to miss out on a formality and have your child suffer later on.

Home schooling is legal in all 50 states; however each state has its own board of education and its own rules and regulations. Some states like Illinois require no paperwork by home schooling parents; other states like Texas require quite a bit of legwork if you do decide to home school.

Home schooling in Ohio falls somewhere in between as it has some rules and regulations but none that are too cumbersome. Home schooling in Ohio is regulated by the Ohio Administrative Code (OAC), Chapter 3301-34 and its requirements include:

Notifying the School

If you decide to home school your child in Ohio, you need to give a written notification to the school which he used to attend or if he was going to start kindergarten, the school he was going to attend as per your local address. The notification for home schooling in Ohio need not be long; just a formality to state that your child is not skipping school; but is rather being taught at home.

Teaching Hours

For home schooled children in Ohio, there is a minimum number of 900 hours per year that they should be schooled. The way you keep the log and whether it will ever be checked is dependent on how strict your local area education office is. However, it is always safer to err on the side of caution by keeping a check on the number of hours your child does get some form of instruction.

Ohio home schooling laws also dictate that the parent who is teaching has at least a high school diploma. They need it to ensure the quality of education being imparted to children the parent can have a higher degree of education, of course, but the bare minimum is a high school diploma to meet the standard.

If the child who is being home schooled in Ohio comes back to school, he will need to have some sort of assessment to see which grade he will enter. Just because he is eight years old does not mean he will automatically be sent to 2nd grade. The authorities want to check if he is up to the mark in reading, writing, math, science and the like. There are two ways to go about his; he or she can either sit for a standard test like he Iowa Test of Basic Skills or the Metropolitan Achievement Test or he could have his portfolio be assessed by a certified teacher.

While the short answer to that question is “yes”, parents who are considering this option in education should first familiarize themselves with Nebraska’s home school laws. A thorough understanding and application of this state’s legal requirements will give parents the necessary framework upon which to build a successful and stress-free home school environment.

A Quick Overview

The home school laws in Nebraska require a child to attend school from the ages of six to eighteen. However, a child under seven or over sixteen may be exempt with a notarized statement from the parents. According to Nebraska’s home school laws, parents must annually file a notice of intent with the state commissioner of education by August 1, or 30 days before the start of every school year.

Failure to comply with this requirement may result in legal action from the school district and a possible truancy charge against the family. The home school laws in Nebraska clearly specify the number of hours a child must receive instruction: 1,032 hours per year at the elementary level and 1,080 hours per year for high school students. Additionally, instruction must be given in a core group of subjects, which includes math, science, social studies, language arts and health.

Legal Forms

Although Nebraska’s home school laws do not require the parents/teachers to possess any specific qualifications, there are several documents that need to be submitted to the school board. One form that must be signed by the parents includes an oath stating that the necessary subjects will be taught. Adherence to the state’s vaccination requirements is also mandated, although there is a religious exemption to this law.

The home school laws of Nebraska also obligate parents to submit information on attendance and enrollment for each student. The parent/teacher, referred to as the “instructional monitor” in the law, must supply personal information such as their name, age and level of education completed. The home school laws in Nebraska do not require any specific record keeping on the part of the parent, or any compulsory testing for the students.

The Liberating Power of Knowledge

When parents have a complete understanding of Nebraska’s home school laws, they are able to confidently operate their home school within the legal borders of their state. This assurance, as a result of their adherence to these laws will provide a sense of freedom in the administrative aspect of their home school, and give them more time to concentrate on the curriculum and the daily rewards of educating their own children.

The decision to home school is one that involves many considerations. Some people choose to home school because of religious reasons, available schools don’t meet the needs of their students or they feel this is the best education for their children. There are many reasons that people decide to home school, and one of the first steps in this consideration is learning how to home school.

How to Home School: The Basic Set Up

When contemplating how to home school, look at your space available for a classroom set up. If your student is going to be participating in online home school activities make sure you have the proper internet access and area for them to work. Look at tables and chairs and where you would have space to teach.

Another part of the set up is making sure that you have the resources to teach. When looking at how to home school take the time to investigate curriculum options. Go online and research available text books for home schooling. Find out about local groups that support home schooling. Many areas have a large group of parents that home school and these are the people that have already gone through the beginning stages of learning how to home school.

If you’re unsure of where to find resources, check with your local board of education. They may not be able to recommended specific curriculum but they may be able to point you in the direction of groups that already support home schooling.

Once you’ve decided on curriculum, and got the area set up for home schooling, the next step in learning how to home school is setting up a schedule. Since you are at home, it can be very easy to slide into an ever changing schedule. Set up a time for each subject and try to stick with it. Remember you’re a teacher, and making a schedule of daily topics a month in advance can help you facilitate a set schedule.

Field trips can be an important part of the home schooling experience so make time in your monthly schedule to incorporate trips to local areas that can enhance the learning experience. Some local home school groups even have monthly outings where the children can get together to socialize.

Some public schools even offer drop in programs for home schooled students. This means your child could participate in music, art or even P.E. Check local schools for their availability.

Learning how to home school can seem to be overwhelming, take time to investigate the options available and learn from other parents who have the experience of home schooling.

As parents become more frustrated with the public and private schooling options for their children, many are turning to home schooling to educate their children. There are varieties of reasons parents are taking this step, and they still must meet the home schooling requirements established by the state in which they live. Some states are considerably more strict than others on the subject of teaching at home, but most states have some types of home schooling requirements before parents can pull their children out of public or private schools.

In ten states there are virtually no rules for educating children at home, depending on the type of home school being established. For instance, if a family chooses to establish and operate a home schooling requirements for all aspects of their education are not required. There is no reporting to the state about the child’s progress, not state-mandated curriculum and no attendance needs to be taken and reporter.

However, should this same family hire a private tutor, the state’s home schooling requirements require the tutor have the proper teaching credentials, the school be in session for 180 days each year and the courses covered be comparable to those in the state’s public schools.

Some States Have More Rigid Rules

At least six states have home schooling requirements that nearly mirror those of traditional schools. They require 175 days of education each year, four hours each day as well as have a teaching certificate or college degree. Parents with a high school diploma or general education degree can teach their children at home, but for the first two years it has to be under the supervision of a certified teacher.

Some of the state’s home schooling requirements include recordkeeping similar to those required by public and private schools such as maintaining a record of the classes taught, the student’s proficiency in those classes as well as attendance records. Standardized tests may also be required throughout the school years, administered by a certified teacher with the results shared with the superintendent of the local public school system. Parents must also notify the school prior to start of the school year of their intent to home school their children.

Some proponents claim that home schooling requirements are merely a veiled attempt to dissuade parents from the establishing their legal right to teach their children in their own way in their own home. Opponents claim the home schooling requirements are designed to insure the child has the best educational opportunities available.
